A Local's Guide to the Best Things to Do in Northern Virginia This Summer
I've lived in Herndon since 2001, which means I've had more than two decades of Northern Virginia summers under my belt. And every year without fail, I hear some version of the same thing from people who are new to the area or thinking about moving here: "Is there actually stuff to do out there?" Yes. There is so much stuff to do out there.
Summer in Northern Virginia doesn't look like summer anywhere else. It's not a beach town, but it's not a sleepy suburb either. It's this genuinely surprising mix of outdoor concerts, community festivals, world-class venues, and the kind of neighborhood events that remind you why you chose this place to call home. If you're wondering what the lifestyle actually looks like here, this is your answer.
Live Music Is a Whole Season
Wolf Trap in Vienna is the crown jewel of summer in NoVA, and if you haven't been, it needs to be on your list immediately. This summer's lineup includes James Taylor performing three nights at the Filene Center — that outdoor amphitheater setting with a warm evening and a blanket on the lawn is one of those experiences that makes you feel genuinely lucky to live here. Tickets start around $72. There are also shows from Orville Peck and a beautiful tribute concert honoring John Prine featuring Emmylou Harris, Margo Price, Patty Griffin, and others.
Over at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Pitbull and Lil Jon are bringing a high-energy summer concert that'll fill that venue fast. And if you want to make a longer night of it, Nationals Park in DC has the Foo Fighters on their Take Cover Tour and My Chemical Romance doing The Black Parade stadium tour — both of those are already moving fast on tickets.
Free Festivals All Summer Long
One of my favorite things about this area is how much of the summer calendar is completely free. The Columbia Pike Blues Festival hits Penrose Square in Arlington on June 13th, running noon to 8pm with live music and a real neighborhood block party energy. Herndon Pride is June 27th at Arts Herndon, noon to 5pm. The Annual ALX Jazz Fest runs June 12th through the 14th at Waterfront Park in Alexandria, and that same weekend the Sails on the Potomac festival is happening right alongside it with live music, ship tours, and educational programs — a genuinely great family day.
July brings the Alexandria and USA Birthday Celebration on the 11th, which is one of the best fireworks displays in the region. Then in late July and early August, the Fairfax County Carnival and Fair comes to Frying Pan Farm Park right here in Herndon, July 30th through August 2nd, with free admission. If you've never taken your kids to Frying Pan Farm, that alone is worth putting on the calendar.
The Prince William County Fair runs July 31st through August 8th in Manassas and is one of the biggest fairs in Virginia, with rides, live music, and the full fair experience. The Arlington County Fair follows in mid-August, free admission, and it's one of those events that just feels like the region at its best. To close out the season, the Around the World Cultural Food Festival comes to Oronoco Bay Park in Alexandria on August 29th — food from dozens of countries, and Alexandria's waterfront as your backdrop.
What This All Actually Means
When buyers ask me what it's like to live in Northern Virginia, I can give them numbers. Median home prices, commute times, school ratings. But the real answer is harder to quantify. It's a Wednesday evening concert at Wolf Trap with a glass of wine on the lawn. It's running into your neighbors at the Herndon festival and realizing you actually know half the people there. It's the fact that your kids can experience cultural festivals, county fairs, and world-class music all within 30 minutes of your front door.
That's not something you can pull up on a spreadsheet. But it's absolutely part of what you're buying when you buy a home here.
